Travel Guide

Everything you need to know before and during your Mongolia trip

Best Time to Travel

Mongolia has four distinct seasons. Choose your trip window based on the experience you want.

Summer (June โ€“ August)

Best overall season

Long days, warm steppes (15โ€“25ยฐC), Naadam Festival in early July, lush green grasslands. The most popular time โ€” book ahead.

Spring (April โ€“ May)

Quiet & blooming

Cool mornings, fewer crowds, melting snow in the north, dust storms possible in the Gobi. Good for cultural trips.

Autumn (September โ€“ October)

Photographer's favorite

Crisp air, golden larches, Eagle Festival in early October, stable weather. Excellent for trekking and horse riding.

Winter (November โ€“ March)

For the bold

Extreme cold (โ€“20 to โ€“40ยฐC), Ice Festival on Khuvsgul Lake, Tsagaan Sar in February. Pack serious thermal gear.

Getting There

Reach Mongolia by air through Ulaanbaatar's Chinggis Khaan International Airport (UBN), or overland by train and road.

By Air

Direct flights from Seoul, Tokyo, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Istanbul, Frankfurt, Moscow and Bangkok. National carrier: MIAT Mongolian Airlines.

By Train

The Trans-Mongolian Railway connects Ulaanbaatar with Moscow (5 days) and Beijing (30 hours). One of the world's iconic rail journeys.

By Road

Land borders with Russia (Altanbulag, Tsagaannuur) and China (Zamiin-Uud, Bulgan). Visa-free transit available for most nationalities.

Health & Safety

Mongolia is generally a safe destination. A bit of preparation goes a long way.

Vaccinations

No mandatory vaccines for entry. Recommended: Hepatitis A & B, Tetanus, Typhoid. Consult your doctor 4โ€“6 weeks before travel.

Travel Insurance

Strongly recommended โ€” including medical evacuation coverage. Remote regions are far from hospitals.

Altitude & Sun

Ulaanbaatar sits at 1,350m. The sun is intense at altitude โ€” bring SPF 50+, sunglasses, and a hat.

Drinking Water

Tap water in cities is generally safe but bottled or filtered water is recommended in the countryside.

Personal Safety

Crime is low. Watch for pickpockets in crowded markets in Ulaanbaatar. Avoid walking alone at night.

Emergency Numbers

Police: 102 ยท Ambulance: 103 ยท Fire: 101 ยท Tourist Police (UB): +976 7000-1284.

Currency & Money

The official currency is the Mongolian Tugrik (MNT or โ‚ฎ). Cards work in cities; cash is essential in the countryside.

Currency

Mongolian Tugrik (โ‚ฎ / MNT). Notes: 100, 500, 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000. Approximate rate: 1 USD โ‰ˆ 3,400 โ‚ฎ (verify before travel).

ATMs

Widely available in Ulaanbaatar and aimag (province) centers. Most accept Visa and Mastercard. Daily withdrawal limits typically apply.

Cards

Hotels, restaurants and large shops in UB accept cards. Outside the city, cash is king.

Currency Exchange

Banks and exchange booths in UB give the best rates. USD, EUR, CNY, KRW, JPY, RUB and GBP are easy to exchange.

Tipping

Not customary historically, but 10% is increasingly common in tourist restaurants. For drivers/guides on multi-day tours: $5โ€“10/day.
